Ethiopia Detains Two Prominent Opposition Politicians PDF Print E-mail

(VOA News) - Two prominent Ethiopian opposition politicians have been detained, at least one of them on terrorism-related charges. But opposition leaders are questioning the charges, saying the detentions appear politically motivated.

Bekele Gerba

Government spokesman Shimeles Kemal says senior opposition figure Bekele Gerba was detained Saturday, charged with having ties to the newly-outlawed Oromo Liberation Front, or OLF, which is fighting for independence for Oromos, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group.

"Bekele Gerba was arrested, detained by the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force in his alleged connection with his involvement with the recently proscribed terrorist organization OLF," said Shimeless.

(By: Tsehaye Debalkew) - May 14, 2010 (Washington DC) - Ethiopia has been granted Birr 1,326,000,000 (One Billion and Three Hundred Twenty Six Million Birr) for its performance in education and its drive to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) set for the sector. This huge financial grant is allotted by the Fast Track Initiative (FIT), a consortium of multi- lateral donor group constituting of the World Bank, the United Kingdom, Finland, Italy and the Netherlands.

Dilwenberu Nega (5th April 2010) - Having raked through my brains, and failed, to find an English word which would express effectively the force that spurs the usual suspects of disgruntled individuals and those salivating for power by crook ways,  I was relieved to find the German word “poltergeist” which I, then, decided to graft onto my otherwise wholly English title of my article.
